Jet in Thailand Crashes, 100 Feared Dead

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) — A passenger plane heading to one of Thailand's leading tourist destinations crashed Sunday as it tried to land in heavy rain and was engulfed in flames. A regional official said as many as 100 people were feared dead.

Worapot Ratthaseema, deputy governor of Thailand's Phuket island, said that as many as 100 were dead, based on assessments that as few as 20 passengers made it of the wreck alive.

"I believe 90 percent or about 100 passengers are fear dead," Worapot said, adding that Phuket airport in southern Thailand had been temporarily closed following the crash of the One-Two-GO jet.

Airplane crashes on landing in southern Thailand

BANGKOK, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- A passenger plane of the budget airline One-Two-Go slid out of runway and crashed with trees in Thailand's southern Phuket airport on Sunday, causing many casualties.

The ill-fated MB 82 aircraft broke into two pieces during the crash while landing at Phuket at about 3:40 p.m. (0840 GMT).

Eye-witnesses said the impact of the crash caused the plane to break in two and they heard a series of explosions.

Initial report said the airplane, flight number OG 269, has 128 passengers and crew.

Thai local news network The Nation reported that some 60 passengers were killed while the TITV said at least 100 were dead. The nationalities of those onboard is also unknown, but Phuket is a highly popular destination for overseas tourists.

Local radio FM 100 said the casualties includes Thais and foreigners.

At least 10 passengers, including four foreigners, have been sent to a local hospital by press time.

The airliner services Bangkok-Phuket flights six times a week. The ill-fated airline left Bangkok's Don Muang airport at about 2:30 p.m. (0730 GMT).

Rescue work has started soon after the crash. Ambulance vehicles have already got to the spot, but local reports said the plane were all burnt down.

The accident was said to be caused by slippery runway after heavy rains.

Chaisak Angsuwan, director general of the Air Transport Authority of Thailand said the aircraft broke in two as it attempted to land at Phuket airport in bad weather.

Chaisak told TITV that there was heavy rain when the plane attempted to make a landing.

"The visibility was poor as the pilot attempted to land. He decided to make a go-around but the plane lost balance and crashed. It was torn into two parts," he said.

Weather in Phuket has been bad for several days, with thunderstorms and high wind gusts at times.
