Almond wood
Almond wood trees grow in a dry evergreen
forest and a mixed deciduous forest
scattering in every region of Thailand,
whereby the location of the forests
must be 150-800 meters higher than
the sea level. The almond wood tree
usually begins to flower in September.
Its wood figure is beautiful, thus,
perfect for furniture making and indoor
structures.
Rosewood
The habitation of rosewood trees is
a mixed deciduous forest scattering
in every region of Thailand, where
the terrain must be 100-700 meters,
or 1,000 meters, above the sea level.
The rosewood trees can also be found
in Myanmar, Lao, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
It flowers in March to May. The pod
of the rosewood tree will get ripen
within 3-4 months after blooming.
The color of the wood is yellowish,
light brown. Its heartwood is of purple
color or brown color with a tint of
purple and black stripes penetrating
all over. The texture of the wood
is moderately fine with narrow stripes
of interlocked grain, tough and strong,
difficult to saw or cut, but easy
to varnish. Suitable for making furniture
and tool handles. Due to its fine-looking
and durability, the products made
of the rosewood are expensive.
Siamese Rosewood
Siamese rosewood trees scatter in
a mixed deciduous forest and a dry
evergreen forest in the middle, the
east, and north-east regions of Thailand,
whereas the area must be 100-250 meters
above the sea level. The Siamese rosewood
trees can be found in Lao, Cambodia,
and Vietnam. The flower season is
during May-July and the pod will get
ripen 3-4 months after blooming. The
wood color is light brown; its heartwood
is of purple-mixed red color or the
darker shade of red with black streaks.
The wood consisting of interlocked
grains is of fine texture; tough and
strong; durable; easy to varnish and
oily. It is suitable for making furniture,
combs, canes, and tool handles, and
carving application. Its products
are fine-looking, durable and expensive.
Iron Wood
Commonly dispersing in all regions
of Thailand, the iron wood tree usually
grows along a creek, stream, or on
the river-edge in the forest of the
medium height to 600 meters above
the sea level. It can also be found
in Myanmar, Lao, Cambodia, Vietnam,
and Malaysia. The iron wood tree usually
flowers in February to May; the fruit
is getting ripe in April to June.
The color of wood is yellowish brown;
the heartwood color is reddish brown.
Suitable for construction and building
e.g. houses, bridges, railroad crossties,
and ships. Added with salt, the water
boiled with the tree bark helps prevent
teeth loosening due to taking the
mercury-processed medicine, when used
for gargle. The tree bark-boiled water
is also used to cleanse the chronic
wound. After mixed with oil, the latex
can be applied to heal a wound. A
mixture of resin of iron wood tree
and the wood preservative oil is used
as a lacquer and applied to caulk
a boat.
Hopea ferrea Laness Tree
Clustering in the evergreen forest
at 100-350 meters above the sea level,
Hopea ferrea Laness tree can grow
on both a plain where water can be
easily seeped through layers of soil
and a limestone foothill in every
region of Thailand. It is also found
in Lao, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Malaysia.
It flowers in August to December and
the fruit is ripe in September to
April. The color of wood is ranging
from light yellow to reddish brown,
with greenish brown streaks. Due to
its strength, the wood lumber is suitable
for making posts, beams, joists, bridges,
crossties, ship skeleton, and etc.
After boiled with the bark and salt,
the water is gargled to prevent teeth
loosening due to taking a medicine
which is prepared with the addition
of mercury, and cleansing the chronic
wound. After mixed with oil, the latex
can be applied to heal a wound.
Yang
Scattering in every region of Thailand
at the medium height to 350 meters
above the sea level, Yang tree usually
grows on the low-land by the creek,
stream, and on the hills. It is also
found in Bangladesh, Myanmar, Lao,
Cambodia, the south of Vietnam, and
Malaysia. It flowers in November to
May and the fruit is ripe in March
to February. The wood lumber is used
in construction e.g. floors, walls,
beams, joists, chests, and etc. The
oil extract is used to coat the timber,
caulk a boat, seal the woven-ware,
make a torch, replace the crude oil
in the engine, cure leprosy by applying
on the infected skin, and cure venereal
disease by orally taking.
Mesawa or Krabak
Scattering in every region of Thailand
at 30-600 meters above the sea level,
Mesawa tree usually grows in an evergreen
forest, and a moist deciduous forest.
In other countries, it is found in
Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Malaysia.
It flowers in December to February
and the fruit is ripe in February
to April. The color of wood is ranging
from yellowish brown to dark brown.
Its application is in field of construction,
making umbrellas, formworks, and chests.
The tree resin is used to mix with
the wood preservative oil and lacquer,
and to caulk a boat.
Sharea obtusa tree
Found in every region of Thailand
at 150-1,300 meters above the sea
level, Sharea obtuse tree scatters
in a big cluster in a dry dipterocarp
forest and a deciduous forest. It
can grow in the laterite soil, and
on the sandstone mountain. It can
be found in Myanmar, Lao, Cambodia,
and Vietnam. It flowers in February
to May and the fruit is ripe in April
to July. The color of wood is ranging
from light brown to reddish brown.
Due to its strength, the wood lumber
is suitable for making posts, beams,
joists, crossbeams, floors, crossties,
ship skeleton, and etc. Its bark is
used to heal wounds, stop bleeding,
heal chronic sores and impetigo. The
tree resin is used to mix with the
wood preservative oil, and to caulk
a boat.
Teak
At the medium height to 900 meters
above the sea level, the teak tree
is found in a deciduous forest in
the northern region and lightly dispersed
in the west of Thailand. Presently,
the teak tree is commonly planted
in the forestry plantation all over
the country. It is also found in India,
Myanmar, and Lao. The wood has a fine-looking
figure, and durability. It is suitable
for house and ship construction, and
furniture making. Used as herbal,
its wood and leafs can cure diabetes,
urinary problem, and kidney problems;
used as carminative and boiled in
water to bath chicken-pox infected
children. The young leafs give red
color, thus can be used as a dye for
cloth and paper.
